New phone in the works

Motorola has begun to design a new phone that looks a lot like the Phonebloks concept I posted earlier in the semester.

Training Design Final Proposal

The Durango HS Running Coach and I had a really cool little tech chat for about an hour today - he emailed me suggestions, I threw them into Illustrator, more suggestions, etc, etc and we wound up with this as the final logo he is going to use in his proposal for his training program. His initial want of a "strong" logo was maintained in the pyramid and hexagon geometry, while the interlocking Ds are a takeoff from the old XC jerseys, so maintained some tradition with that. The duranGOdemons was also kind of a neat way to separate the text without spaces. Not sure the final was my personal favorite, but it was a really quick evolution (from Friday-Tuesday) that I think was only made possible by what I took away from the design classes in the last few months. Not sure how many of you guys are more into the logo/branding side of things, but it's more of my background so thought I'd share. This stuff gets me excited!

UMFA Design Exhibit

Maybe you guys have seen this on the homepage, or have visited it, or maybe helped design it? I think I am going to swing in to check it out this week, see what the graphic design students have been up to!

K so I follow this website for modern designs and have really only ever bought one thing, yet I'm always looking at it. I saw this, and even though it's a little pricy for a keychain the idea is awesome. Removes bulk and the jingling of keys which both drive me nuts.

New extreme sport toy!

It kind of seems at times like everything there is to invent in a particular field has been invented. Well no matter how hard you think it would be to come up with something new, that's certainly not the case. I feel its almost like reinventing the wheel -- making something new from whats been around us for years.
Here's an idea!

The future direction of wrist wear.

Would you want one of these on your wrist? Would it really help?

Cities on the sea? I would argue that we still have plenty of land to settle before this would ever be necessary. Afraid of rising sea levels? A well built wall will probably do. Despite that, it's still interesting to imagine what form sea cities could potentially take. Check it out on MSN.

Graphic Design Competitions

I don't know if any of you have any free time.....but sometimes once in a while it's cool to check out what is in demand for graphic design and do some creative thinking for its own sake just to see where your mind takes you. This site has a few different design competitions, and I think it's worth sitting down and sketching some ideas that pop into your head when you look at this kind of stuff. You might be surprised how close your sketches can be to the final design they end up picking!

Logo Designer Raja Sandhu's Personal Site

I am not so sure about the design of the site, but the displayed logos are pretty diverse. I'm currently working on a logo for a Cross Country team and ran across this in my precedent research, just for some brainstorming help and inspiration.

Designing Brand identity

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/designing-brand-identity-alina-wheeler/1101202566?ean=9780470401422

This is a book I have had for a few years now. A lot of my initial interest in design came from brand identities and the idea of designing and implement a brand. A lot of this book pertains to graphic designers but I do feel there is a lot of useful things for us. Each of us is designing a brand identity for ourselves.

Graphic Design Podcast

http://thedeependdesign.com/graphic-design-podcast/

This is a graphic design podcast I recently found. It's not ground breaking or anything but it is interesting. I have found that graphic communication is a huge part of our future careers. This is just one way I attempt to improve that skill. I wish we had more room in our course sequence for graphic design but we have to make do with what we have.

On the iTunes Store there is a design section. I plan to explore the podcasts and see if anything more interesting presents itself.

For the Bicycle commuters out there!

FlyKly bicycle wheel does it all, and to me is just one example of a growing trend: Energy recycling. We supposedly (Physics...sigh) have a  fixed amount of energy in this universe, how much of it do we waste every day? It's time we harnessed that dontcha think?

Below is an excerpt from an interview with Jony Ive and Marc Newson who have recently been working together designing Product Red charity products for auction. I recommend you read the entire interview. I was impressed by their attention to detail. All aspects of their products are designed with the end user in mind.

“We are both fanatical in terms of care and attention to things people don’t see immediately,” Ive said. “It’s like finishing the back of a drawer. Nobody’s going to see it, but you do it anyway. Products are a form of communication—they demonstrate your value system, what you care about.”

Washing Machine Concept

http://www.industrialdesignserved.com/gallery/WM-Washing-Machine-Concept/9598041

I came across this washing machine design and found it to be a possible aesthetic inspiration for our crash cart designs. What I think is so great about the design is that the industrial design supports the control system. Often with products like this the controls seem very separate from the form. Here they blend seamlessly which I feel supports the connection between the controls and the services the washing machine offer the user.

A hundred years ago, the Zeppelin was seen as the future of air flight. The dream quickly faded after the Hindenburg incident of the late 1930's. But that dream might finally be coming to fruition. 1/3 the fuel as a typical cargo jet and the ability to land and deliver supplies anywhere without landing pad or runway: Enter Aerocraft.
