Spaghetti portion control

Now a days everyone is very conscious about portion control (I mean, we even have a group doing a nudge on the issue). I think this is a great product to simplify a process that used to be very inconsistent.

Leave no space unused..

This designer went to extremes when it comes to space utilization\

Squatting for the Subway

I think this is such a cool concept that was put together! I think it sort of goes along with this nudge product and getting people to do something that they normally don't do - Even though it's not really a subconscious decision.

It's all in Russian, but you don't really need to read anything to enjoy it.

I came across this wine cellar while serving the inter webs. I think it is a clever combination of two relatively unrelated design. The design on the spiral staircase served as a basis for this wine cellar. This is something I attempt to do in my ideations. Combining two unlike concepts can often bread something new and interesting.

Rebel Design

So I was watching some TedTalks on Netflix a few nights ago and came across two episodes that tie in with this class really well. Primarily the subject of these two lectures was on data visualization, but instead of simple info graphics these guys were representing information with videos, time lapses, and other stunning forms. You should really check these out, I found them to be quite inspiring.

The first lecture was by Aaron Koblin and the other by David McCandless.
If you try to find them just search 'Rebel Design' and they are the 2nd and 4th episode in the series

Adding a little Modern Design flair to Libraries

Jim was saying in class the other day that most buildings that have a well-established function(i.e. Library, recreation center, school, etc) have a really similar design language across their specific category (libraries look like libraries, etc) and that when someone goes really out of the box in that subset of architecture, it gets noticed. While doing some research for our Guerrilla Nudge project I ran across these modern library designs!

Illustrator Plugin

http://www.specctr.com

Specctr is a illustrator plugin that is used to easily dimension and annotate an interface design. Often when you do interface design you don't actually generate the code for the interface. With Specctr and its easy annotations you can send an illustrator rendering of an interface design with specific details for them to implement. I have done interface design and the programs almost always botch the design despite their good intentions. Without design training it is hard for them to correctly interpret the design correctly. Specctr just gives some added help.

Training Design Final Proposal

The Durango HS Running Coach and I had a really cool little tech chat for about an hour today - he emailed me suggestions, I threw them into Illustrator, more suggestions, etc, etc and we wound up with this as the final logo he is going to use in his proposal for his training program. His initial want of a "strong" logo was maintained in the pyramid and hexagon geometry, while the interlocking Ds are a takeoff from the old XC jerseys, so maintained some tradition with that. The duranGOdemons was also kind of a neat way to separate the text without spaces. Not sure the final was my personal favorite, but it was a really quick evolution (from Friday-Tuesday) that I think was only made possible by what I took away from the design classes in the last few months. Not sure how many of you guys are more into the logo/branding side of things, but it's more of my background so thought I'd share. This stuff gets me excited!

It kind of seems at times like everything there is to invent in a particular field has been invented. Well no matter how hard you think it would be to come up with something new, that's certainly not the case. I feel its almost like reinventing the wheel -- making something new from whats been around us for years.

Graphic Design Competitions

I don't know if any of you have any free time.....but sometimes once in a while it's cool to check out what is in demand for graphic design and do some creative thinking for its own sake just to see where your mind takes you. This site has a few different design competitions, and I think it's worth sitting down and sketching some ideas that pop into your head when you look at this kind of stuff. You might be surprised how close your sketches can be to the final design they end up picking!

Designing Brand identity

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/designing-brand-identity-alina-wheeler/1101202566?ean=9780470401422

This is a book I have had for a few years now. A lot of my initial interest in design came from brand identities and the idea of designing and implement a brand. A lot of this book pertains to graphic designers but I do feel there is a lot of useful things for us. Each of us is designing a brand identity for ourselves.

Graphic Design Podcast

http://thedeependdesign.com/graphic-design-podcast/

This is a graphic design podcast I recently found. It's not ground breaking or anything but it is interesting. I have found that graphic communication is a huge part of our future careers. This is just one way I attempt to improve that skill. I wish we had more room in our course sequence for graphic design but we have to make do with what we have.

On the iTunes Store there is a design section. I plan to explore the podcasts and see if anything more interesting presents itself.

Below is an excerpt from an interview with Jony Ive and Marc Newson who have recently been working together designing Product Red charity products for auction. I recommend you read the entire interview. I was impressed by their attention to detail. All aspects of their products are designed with the end user in mind.

“We are both fanatical in terms of care and attention to things people don’t see immediately,” Ive said. “It’s like finishing the back of a drawer. Nobody’s going to see it, but you do it anyway. Products are a form of communication—they demonstrate your value system, what you care about.”

Washing Machine Concept

http://www.industrialdesignserved.com/gallery/WM-Washing-Machine-Concept/9598041

I came across this washing machine design and found it to be a possible aesthetic inspiration for our crash cart designs. What I think is so great about the design is that the industrial design supports the control system. Often with products like this the controls seem very separate from the form. Here they blend seamlessly which I feel supports the connection between the controls and the services the washing machine offer the user.

Blurring the lines between Organic and Electric: Bio-Tech

The idea that a specific human being is unique in several of their characteristics, i.e. fingerprints and heartbeats, is taking hold not just for identification in the medical world, but possibly as a password tool in apps and phones and the up and coming smart watches. Passwords are broken with algorithms; how well would biological qualities defy an algorithmic pattern compared to our standard numbers and letters?

Bio-Tech Heart Beat Passwords

Innovation vs. Excess

Where do we draw the line? Just because something CAN be electronic, does it really need to be? Using electricity unnecessarily where analog does just as well....seems like a cool idea, but inefficient use of electricity where it "sci fi" doesn't necessarily have to enter our lives. This is where the lines of practicality and innovation need to find an appropriate intersection.

Simple Design (Example)

The design of this usb drive is perfectly functional while still offering a beautiful and compelling form. There are no extra layers or out casing. The metal frame that shapes the usb connection is just extended back as the body of the drive. There are no moving parts which eliminates the annoyance of you drive breaking after repeated use. The best part is this is the least expensive drive at Office Depot! $6 for an 8GB model.

I love this video because it shows how the physical form of the iPhone 5C lent to ios 7's design and vise versa. One of my first design classes taught me the design strategy of designing with and for the inherent qualities of an artifact and this is a perfect example of that.

Bullet Journal - A Designer's new method of organization

This is a pretty efficient way of task notetaking and organization. I wonder how well it can be adapted to brainstorming ideas, etc, or something that isn't quite as linear as a "to do" list. The "forwarding" of events is a great mental check, though, as it forces you to review and rewrite your incomplete tasks. I might start trying this?
